St. Matthew’s Cathedral Music

The Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral Choir is a highly trained choir that sings at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Eucharist, as well as diocesan liturgies, an annual memorial concert, and the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols. The Cathedral Choir rehearses weekly on Sundays, 12 noon–1:30 p.m. There are occasional midweek rehearsals when preparing for special events.

The Cathedral Choir welcomes new singers at any time of the year by audition. If you read music, have experience singing in a choir, and would like to know more about joining the Cathedral Choir, please contact Michie Akin at makin@episcopalcathedral.org or call the Music Office 214-887-6552.

The Parish Choir
The Parish Choir is made up of singers (adults and teenagers) who do not necessarily have the time to commit to the normal rehearsal schedule of the Cathedral Choir, but who do enjoy occasionally participating in music leadership in the Cathedral. The Parish Choir sings once a month, usually on fourth Sundays. They sing a wide range of music, and no audition is necessary. The only requirement is that the singer be present at the rehearsal one hour prior to the service for which the Parish Choir is singing. This Choir does not vest nor process. We are always looking to increase the number of participants in this choir. Please contact Adam Frame at xanca03@yahoo.com or call the Music Office 214-887-6552 for more details.

The Cathedral Choristers
The Cathedral Choristers is the children’s choir training program of the Cathedral. They sing once a month, usually with the Cathedral Choir. Using a training curriculum based on the Royal School of Church Music model, these children receive weekly vocal training, learn to read music, and discover the joy of being leaders in worship. Boys remain part of the Chorister Program until their voices break and change, while the girls are welcome to stay on into high school. Any child in grades two and above is welcome to become a Cathedral Chorister.

Rehearsal for the Junior Choristers (grades 2 & 3) is on Wednesday afternoon, from 4:45 until 5:30 p.m., led by Adam Frame.
Senior Choristers (grades 4-8) rehearse on Wednesday afternoon from 4:45 - 6 p.m., led by Michie Akin and Adam Frame.

Please call the Music Office for more details, 214-887-6552.

St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts

Founded in 2011, St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts is a center for arts, culture and community in the East Dallas neighborhood. Since 2011, SMCA has partnered with the Dallas Bach Society, La Novella Baroque, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre to offer FREE live performances in the Cathedral, along with public exhibitions by local artists such as Carolyn Brown, Connie Sales and Fred Gardner in the newly refurbished Justus Sundermann Gallery

St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts receives no funding from the Cathedral parish or the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. Present financial support comes from patrons and supporters who are members and “friends” of the Cathedral. Our goal is to generate new audiences, which in turn would provide financial support and benefits to help sustain SMCA into the future. An integral part of the SMCA philosophy is to share the arts with the entire community regardless of one’s ability to pay.

For more information, please visit www.cathedralartsdallas.org. We would love your help making our organization everything you want it to be. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us at 214-887-6552 or email us at info@cathedralarts.org.

Justus Sundermann Gallery

With new exhibits on a regular basis, the Justus Sundermann Gallery is a perfect venue for local artists and a treasure for Cathedral regulars. Each exhibit includes an Artist Reception that brings new faces to our campus.  Sale of the artwork benefits St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts. The Justus Sundermann Gallery is open on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. Call 214-887-6552 for more information.
